Introduction
Our aim ...
is to increase the bond between AFV modellers and provide a casual non-competitive forum for AFV
modellers to discuss techniques and improve their modelling skills.
We are not a competition.
No first, second, third; we use an open judging system, that judges each model on it's own merits.
It is possible for multiple modellers to be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in each category.
Models entered for judging are never compared to other models.
Our intent is to reward modellers for their good work and effort.
Any registered entrant may judge.
We encourage entrants to check off the appropriate box on the registration forms for judging duties
(A great way to meet other modellers).

Modeller's Levels
| Basic : |
The basic level is the introductory level to allow modellers that are developing their skills to
be evaluated and judged in a non-competitive open scoring system.
Modellers may choose to participate at this level for their first show where they will learn about
the open scoring system and hopefully receive useful comments on how to build better models.
|
| Intermediate : |
Intermediate entries are those where some effort has been made to improve, correct or otherwise
enhance the accuracy and presentation of a model.
Models at this level exhibit some scratch built modifications or changes, the addition of commercially
available upgrades or conversion sets.
|
| Advanced : |
An advanced entry is expected to be close to perfection both in modelling skills and accuracy as
well as presentation.
Judging in this category is very rigorous and unforgiving.
A mistake in accuracy or technique leads to significant score reductions.
(You've been warned)
|
Judging - Method
Judging will be conducted while the 'show' is in progress and commence with the start of registration.
Each entry will be examined by three judges (one table captain and two judges).
All table captains will be selected from intermediate or advanced modellers familiar with judging.
Basic and intermediate category models will be judged by advanced or intermediate level modellers.
Advanced category models will be judged by advanced level modellers only.
Judges will read all accompanying materials to ensure the entrant receives due consideration as to the level of skill, research and any unique characteristics of the model.
Table captains will make notes, suggestions for improvements or constructive criticisms on the score sheet.
These notes will be stapled and returned to the modeller.
Judging - Criteria
Construction:
Points shall be deducted for errors with basic construction techniques and clean-up of parts including
body work, figures, running gear, tracks and wheels, weapons and accessories.
Basic construction techniques include:
- mold seams and flash removal
- Mold ejector pin marks filled / sanded and made good
- Panels and Panel lines lined up
- Turrets sitting evenly on the hull
- Gaps and seams filled where appropriate
- Running gear aligned
- Level set of all appropriate parts touching the ground
- Realistic track sag
- Are weapons true on axis, pointed correctly, without bend or warp
- Is equipment realistically mounted to and stowed on a vehicle or figure in sensible locations
- Are weapons and equipment realistically gripped in a figures hand
- Vehicles and figures must integrate with ground work ... a 60 ton tank leaves an impression
... it doesn't float above the ground.
Finishing:
Points shall be deducted for mistakes made with the paint finish, decal and markings application and
finish quality, as well as overall weathering consistency and quality.
Finishing errors to consider include:
- Finger prints
- Brush marks, blobs or runs, hits or smudges
- Lustre…flat or gloss finishes where appropriate
- Over spray and spitting
- Decals…alignment, silvering, milky outline, torn or disfigured
-
Weathering must be consistent and logical.
If a vehicle is meant to be factory fresh there shouldn't be a great amount of battle damage or rust present.
If a vehicle is meant to have been well used and in action then the vehicle and running gear should be weathered more.
Logically a vehicle or figure representing one that was to have operated in very muddy or dusty terrain should demonstrate that they actually travelled through the terrain.
In the case of vignettes or dioramas attention will be paid to the overall consistency of the weathering of the base and groundwork elements matching that of the figures and vehicles
Detailing:
Points shall be deducted for mistakes made with added detailing, aftermarket additions
(detailing and aftermarket additions must blend seamlessly with the basic model).
Points shall be deducted for mistakes in research and accuracy (critical in the advanced category).
Modellers in the intermediate and advanced categories are encouraged to include evidence, photographic
or otherwise, of their additions and modifications.
Judging - Points
Again ... we are not a competition!
We are not a first past the post competition.
Each of the modeller's entries is judged on it's own merits.
It is not compared to any other model!
Each modeller is eligible for one medal per category entered.
If a modeller enters more than one model per category the judges will award a medal to the modeller's
highest scoring entry.
The scale of an entry is not a factor in judging.
Awards are weighted according to the modelling level entered.
The point spread for medals is as follows:
| Basic, Intermediate and Advanced : |
Gold : |
17 out of 20 |
| Silver : |
15 out of 20 |
| Bronze : |
12 out of 20 |
